US: Cities Begin To Ban Advertising
In the US various city authorities are taking independent action to ban outdoor tobacco advertising. The Supreme Court has granted permission for the state of Baltimore to ban tobacco outdoor advertising near places where children gather; New York City has introduced legislation banning cigarette and smokeless tobacco advertising and promotion within 1,000 feet of playgrounds, schools, childcare day centres, children’s institutions and youth amusement arcades. Washington DC and Seattle are considering following New York City’s move; in Washington DC’s case the radial ban would extend to 2,000 feet, and other restrictions will be appended.
