US Events Prompt Blanket Press Coverage

The terrorist attacks in the US prompted predictable blanket coverage in the national press today. Yesterday evening, London commuters who had not been glued to office TVs or overloading the internet looking for coverage (see US Attacks Hit Internet) read about the tragedy in the Evening Standard, which managed to get reports onto the first few pages of its final editions.

Today the Times, Guardian and Telegraph ran extra supplements as well as dedicating around half of their normal news space to the story. The Daily Mail and Daily Express both flagged themselves as “special editions” with the Mail offering 32 pages of coverage and the Express 88.

The Sun and Mirror both ran with wrap covers showing the ubiquitous image, captured by TV cameras, of the impact of the second hijacked aircraft on the World Trade Centre. Inside, the bulk of the news pages were filled with mainly image-led coverage.

Most papers gave a lot of space to shocking photographs of the events, which unfolded under the full media gaze due to the many TV crews, photographers and journalists present in Manhattan and Washington.
