US: New TV Advertising Practice
Some spirits advertisements on TV in the US now carry a six second “responsibility reminder”, one of which says: “People of legal drinking age should enjoy alcohol responsibly, but don’t drink if you are under 21.” Others feature reminders against drinking alcohol and driving, or drinking alcohol while pregnant. The move is at the initiative of Seagram, as part of an effort to persuade the major TV broadcasters to drop their opposition to spirits advertising. So far only small cable networks have agreed to carry such advertising, although there is no statutory ban.
