Van Wagner Gives Big Spenders The Big Picture

City workers earning the biggest wads in Britain are to be targeted with the biggest billboards in Britain, thanks to US outdoor contractor Van Wagner bringing New York’s idea of advertising to the UK.

Four locations on the key traffic routes into the City of London now feature 85ft long back illuminated light boxes. The largest roadside structures in the UK, the light boxes are twice as big as standard 96 sheet sites. The locations of Finsbury Square, Tower Gate, Clerkenwell and the A11 have been chosen to target the high-earners who flood into the Square Mile to work each day.

Van Wagner’s sales and marketing manager Kevin Shute can reel off some impressive statistics for the audience the sites will reach. In 1999, for example, over 582,000 people worked within the Square Mile in financial services or related professions such as law, accountancy and communications. And, on average, City-based workers earn 78% above the country’s gross weekly average wage and 37% above the London average.

Van Wagner are continuing to think big with future projects, which are said to include “the biggest billboards on the planet” and 25ft high portrait format light boxes.
