Vauxhall Boycotts Tabloids

Vauxhall, one of the UK’s largest advertisers is to boycott the Daily Mirror and Daily Star in protest against their coverage of the Euro’ 96 encounter with England and Germany. Coverage by the two tabloids has included references to the Second World War together with pictures of England players superimposed in British Army uniforms.

Wolfgand Schubert, Vauxhall’s Marketing Communications Director, who is German, stated:

“Today’s advert for the Vectra from Vauxhall is funny and topical and reflects the mood of England supporters everywhere. But we also think it’s important not to offend anyone, so we have run the Vectra ad in every national newspaper except those papers which we feel have gone too far – the Daily Star and Daily Mirror.”

It is believed that the Press Complaints Commission received approximately 260 calls from readers protesting at the Daily Mirror.
