Viacom Outdoor Swipes GNER Contract From Maiden

Viacom Outdoor has snatched the GNER advertising sales contract from Maiden Outdoor, in a move that has dealt a blow to its rival’s core railway station business.

The new seven-year deal, which begins in January, represents the first rail contract for the company, which has been looking to expanding into the sector for sometime.

It includes the rights to sell a range of outdoor formats at GNER stations along the East Coast mainline services between London Kings Cross and Scotland, as well as the remit to develop additional revenue opportunities at the sites.

Viacom Outdoor’s joint managing director, Andrew Oldham said: “Winning this contract marks an important breakthrough for our UK business. We are really excited about working with GNER and believe our fresh approach will generate more demand from advertisers.”

Viacom’s GNER win breaks Maiden’s monopoly of the 26 outdoor media contracts in the UK’s railway stations. It is understood that the two companies are in the process of bidding for a number of contracts up for pitch, including Connex, Mersey Rail and Chiltern Railways.

Oldham added: “Many other train contracts will be tendered in the coming months and we hope to secure a good share of this sector. I really believe we can replicate the success we have had with buses and London Underground in the rail sector.”

Viacom Outdoor recently launched an extensive outdoor advertising campaign to promote Disney’s new animated film Finding Nemo across the London Underground Tube Network. The activity included a special wrap-around poster at Waterloo station featuring aquatic characters from the film (see Viacom Outdoor Rolls Out Finding Nemo Campaign).
