Viewers Choose BBC One In World Cup Final Face-Off

BBC Logo BBC One absolutely blew away ITV yesterday, as a peak of 15.7 million adults tuned into the Corporation’s World Cup final coverage, compared with just 3.2 million for ITV1.

An average of 10.1 million adults (a 52% audience share) chose to watch the tournament climax on BBC One, while ITV1 could only manage an average of 2.2 million adults (a 10% audience share).

ABC1 Men also preferred the BBC, with an average of 3.1 million (a 64% audience share) watching France lose on penalties, while ITV1 attracted an average ABC1 Men audience of 464,000 (a 9% audience share) across the evening’s coverage.

Apart from the soccer, the Wimbledon final was a hit for BBC One on a great day for sports fans. A peak of 6.6 million adults saw Roger Federer win the coveted men’s title for an amazing fourth consecutive time, with the afternoon programme bringing in an average of five million adult viewers (a 43% audience share).

Big Brother was the strongest performer on Channel 4 last night, attracting a peak of 4.5 million adult viewers and an average of 3.9 million (a 19% audience share) in its 10pm timeslot.

Five’s biggest audience of the evening was for the romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail, which brought in an average of 1.3 million adult viewers (a 6% audience share).
