Virgin Expands Multiplex Cinemas

Virgin Cinemas has announced a major expansion plan to build 18 new multiplexes within the next four years, doubling its total multiplex cinema chain to 37 sites.

As part of this accelerated multiplex strategy the majority of the traditional cinemas are to be sold: ABC Cinemas recently bought 90 ‘high street’ cinemas from Virgin for £68 million.

By fulfilling this expansion plan over the next few years, Virgin envisages expanding the overall cinema market with the new Virgin circuit achieving at least the same market share as the entire MGM chain has today.
