The BBC iPlayer service on the Virgin Media platform recorded over 10 million viewings in June, according to new figures released by the cable company.
Last month was the first full month the service was available to cable TV customers and it attracted half as many viewings as the BBC website.
The iPlayer website had 20.4 million requests to view programmes in June.
Virgin Media launched the iPlayer at the end of April, allowing viewers to watch full screen pictures at full quality on their television set without the need for downloading (see iPlayer To Launch On Virgin Media).
Originally only available through the platform’s red button interactive service, it became accessible through its EPG on June 1, a move which has boosted the surge in user numbers.
Rahul Chakkara, BBC controller, TV platforms, said: “The initial success on Virgin Media underlines the multiplatform appeal of the BBC iPlayer proposition.”
