Voila! – First Issue Review

The new society magazine billed as a cross between Hello and Tatler, Voila! is out this week. The glossy monthly with a cover price of £1.50 is edited by Dai LLewellyn; contributors include Prince Mangal Kapoor, the Marquess of Blandford and Lady Bernard.

The subjects covered editorially are no less grand than the writers; this issue has features on Prince Charles’ education, “Handles and Gongs” or who outranks whom, Debs of the 90s, a review of the new Maserati by the Marquess of Blandford as well as a section called Carousel which has photos of the most glittering guests at London parties. The attitude of the magazine is very much by the aristocracy for the aristocracy, with much royalist support and sniding comments about “commoners”.

Although the paper quality is high, the reproduction of photographs is quite poor and the actual articles have an amateurish look to their style, with none of the sophistication of Tatler.

Of the 68 pages, 17 are given to advertising, 2 of these to classified pages. This represents 25% of total pages. Major brand advertisers are Laurent- Perrier Champagne, Lufthansa, Samsara from Guerlain and the Mayfair Intercontinental Hotel.
