Voluntary Code For TV Sports Highlights

Voluntary Code For TV Sports Highlights

The government is set to negotiate a voluntary code of practice among those involved in broadcasting TV highlights of sports events. This comes after Labour withdrew an attempt to force broadcasters, especially satellite companies, to make recorded highlights of such events available to all terrestrial television.

Under the proposal agreed in the Lords last night, an agreement will be developed to ensure that terrestrial broadcasters gain reasonable access to highlights. Lord Inglewood, the broadcasting minister, supports this method of dealing with sports coverage: it is much more flexible than changing the broadcasting bill which is now before Parliament.

The issue came to a head at the weekend with disputes over highlights of the Bruno Tyson fight.
