Wagadon’s Deluxe Closes After Eight Months
Face and Arena, says that the market was not open to a magazine which didn’t primarily focus on ‘babes’.
The magazine’s last issue, which featured a speed garage covermounted CD, still only managed to sell 48,000 copies – well below the title’s target circulation of 80,000. “There is only so much money you can spend,” said a member of Wagadon staff close to Deluxe. “But it’s a great shame,” she added.
By contrast, Cabal Communications’ front magazine, which launched in October, and was dropped by some supermarkets for a having too high a sexual content (see Cabal Retaliates To Alleged Ban Of Front By Supermarkets), reportedly sold over 400,000 copies. FHM, as the market leader in this sector, shifts 775,000 copies per issue – the current edition of FHM features the World’s Hottest Women 1999 Calender.
