WAP Services Reach Record Total In January
![]()
Mobile internet services attracted an average of 17 million page impressions per day during January, according to the latest figures from the Mobile Data Association (MDA) and the UK’s four GSM operators.
This brings the total for the month to 524 million, which represents an increase of over 100 million on December’s figure (see WAP Services Go From Strength To Strength In December).
The MDA attributes the 24% month on month record growth to the increasing variety of WAP based services available to mobile internet users. January’s most popular services included ringtones, screensavers and downloads, with demand for WAP games increasing steadily.
According to the MDA, there are currently over 25 million mobile internet enabled handsets in the UK. The MDA expects continued growth in the sector, with page impressions expected to reach 8 billion for 2003.
The latest figures from the MDA also revealed that the popularity of SMS shows little signs of abating. 1.65 billion person to person text messages were sent across the four GSM networks during January (see Text Messaging Continues To Rise In January).
