Wap Usage Continues To Grow During May

WAP usage in the UK has almost doubled over the past nine months, according to the latest research from the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

The figures show that 699 million page impressions were made across the four GSM mobile operators in May, taking the daily average to 22.5 million. This is double September 2002’s daily average, which stood at 11 million when the MDA first began recording WAP figures.

The most popular WAP sites viewed during May continued to be those offering ring tones and screensavers, although there is an increasing percentage of page impressions now coming from sports and news sites.

According to the MDA, the doubling of UK WAP figures in the last nine months illustrates the growing visual world of mobile data communications. The types of mobile communications adopted are being influenced by a growth in handset choice, bigger and better colour displays and a wider choice of content. This is all assisted by tailored handsets and speed of access improvements that now exist for WAP based content services.

Mobile marketing could reach new heights over the coming year, according to recent research from Cambridge University, which revealed that most consumers are now aware of photo messaging applications and are willing to pay for them (see Study Suggests Mobile Marketing Could Hit New Highs).
