WAP Usage Continues To Rise During June

The number of WAP page impressions viewed in the UK increased to 784 million during June, up 12% on the previous month, according to the latest figures from the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

The figures from GSM network operators O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone, take the daily average for June to 26 million, a significant increase on the previous month’s figure of 22.5 million per day.

The MDA attributes this growth to improved access speeds for WAP-based content services, together with a wider choice of handsets possessing bigger and better colour displays. There is also more content available now, than ever before and MDA research shows the most popular WAP sites viewed during June were those carrying games, sports and news.

Based on consecutive monthly increases during 2003, the MDA predicts that WAP page impressions will reach 8 billion by the end of the year. June’s figure takes the cumulative total for 2003 to more than 3 billion.

A recent study from Mediaedge:cia suggests the market for new mobile phone services, such as picture messaging, could almost double by the end of the year. 7% of mobile phone users already have picture messaging capability and a further 5% are predicted to adopt the service within the next six months (see Picture Messaging Set To Take Off In Next Six Months).
