Web Round-Up – W/E 25/07/97
Homes without computers can now go on-line by switching on the TV. A new gadget, about the size of a satellite receiver, connects a TV to a telephone line and allows viewers to surf the Net through their TV sets. The service is being provided by NetChannel, which is packaging the Internet service into ‘channels’ such as news, sport and entertainment.
Meanwhile, supermarkets are tuning into TV shopping. Safeway and Sainsburys are both in talks with British Interactive Services, which is providing the interactive services for British Digital Broadcasting. The company aims to have at least thirty retail, travel and financial service companies lined-up for the launch.
Leeds City Council IT staff will receive £900,000 in bonuses for their part in solving the year 2000 problem. This is the first public body to offer bonuses to staff involved in completing the millennium project.
The Internet edition of The Times is to run an on-line database of university vacancies when the clearing service comes into operation on 14 August. Students will be able to search for courses by code, title or subject, or by university or region.
