The Guardian’s RecruitNet is set to become one of the biggest recruitment sites on the Internet. The site provides competition to the already existing Internet appointments sections in the Times Online and Electronic Telegraph. RecruitNet also allows advertisers to place basic text advertisements free of charge from Monday to Thursday and Saturday. Job seekers will be provided with a search engine and can e-mail CVs directly to employers. The site launches on October 24. http://recruitnet.guardian.co.uk/

Emap is planning to launch additional subscription based titles to their Compuserve Wed-based service. Approximately 20 titles are being planned which will include material from the magazines together with Web-only content. Already up and running are FHM, Empire, Car World and Image. Those not subscribed to Emap’s services can access FHM, Empire, CarWorld, Image, Q,, Select, Max Power, New Woman and Sport via the Media Links section in the Media Village.

The Economist is planning the launch of a subscription Web service in December. According to speculation the site will concentrate on analysis rather than news.

A number of cable companies including Nynex and Telewest is said to be experimenting with cable modems that give subscribers access to the Internet up to 300 times faster than standard telephone modems. Newsline spoke to various sources which said that a breakthrough in this area in technology could lead to a fall in the use of the World Wide Web via the telephone.

Netscape may launch a direct assault on Microsoft’s Windows desktop format with the release of a product with a new browser display. If the product is launched users will be able to access standard applications, such as wordprocessors and spreadsheets, without having to leave the browser. Microsoft is believed to be developing a similar package.

A new piece of Internet software entitled Castanet, allows a PC to automatically install software by transmitting it through the Internet.
