If you want to watch history as it happens, the hand-over of Hong Kong will be shown live on ITN’s Internet site http://www.itn.co.uk, the coverage begins on Monday June 30 from 3.30pm.
The Guardian is set to become Britain’s first newspaper to provide an online events guide, The Guide, which comes on Saturdays with the print version of the paper, goes on the paper’s Web site this weekend.
There are now a growing number of co-dependent Web-sites which tie-in several advertisers; Tizer, the soft drink, now has its own site at http://www.tizer.co.uk, the site is designed to tie in with the brand’s sponsorship of ITV’s The Chart Show.
Associated Newspapers has shut down its subscriber-only Royal Family Web-site. It was unable to compete with the free-to-access Royalty sites.
Action by Reuters is making it increasingly difficult for MAID and Reed Elsevier to fill gaps in their on-line business information systems. Reuters is now denying these two companies access to its news database. The restriction imposed by Reuters precedes the relaunch next month of Reuters’ Business Briefing, which will be in direct competition with MAID’s Profound and Reed’s Lexis-Nexis services.
The International Webcasting Association – Europe held its inaugural meeting in London this month. Its mission is to promote the effective and efficient delivery of multimedia content over the Internet, through cable and satellite and other digital networks. The Association will provide a free and open forum for the discussion of issues related to Webcasting.
