Website Of The Week – Juiced

Any publication aimed at students is always going to run into problems as it tries to present a wacky carefree humour without sounding unforgivably trite and patronising. Very few seem to be able to manage it and, sadly, the Daily Telegraph ‘s Juiced is one of them. As an example, Juiced’s financial section can only manage a variety of ways to drink lots on the cheap. Now, fair enough, students drink a lot and they don’t have very much money but it’s a bit condescending to offer no actual financial advice at all.

Although Juiced has a number of other sections each of them is fairly narrow in scope. The music reviews section only covers dance (an attempt to be hip?) and the health section is just a series of rants on how everyone should stop smoking which, judging by my knowledge of student life, isn’t going to win many friends. The reviews which are included, however, are detailed, informed and intelligently written.

Arts coverage seems to be Juiced‘s showpiece, offering a comprehensive selection of detailed interviews with a large number of British artists and providing a showcase for their work; there is also a report on the Royal Academy’s controversial Sensation exhibition which is currently open.

Otherwise, the Juiced site doesn’t look particularly exciting, it doesn’t offer anything especially unique and, to be honest, I can’t see many self-respecting students sitting on the Internet reading the Daily Telegraph‘s attempt to be young. The printed version is probably a better bet.
