Website Of The Week: NiE News
http://www.nie.northcliffe.co.uk/
Northcliffe NiE Project is designed to help newspapers within the Northcliffe Newspapers Group communicate with pupils, students, parents and teachers. The NiE website concentrates on areas within the newspaper industry where children can learn about the press by interacting with features on the site or with the help of teachers and parents.
The Careers in the Newspaper Industry section allows students to select job categories in press so they can find out how to develop their skills. The section offers advice on relevant courses and qualifications and covers virtually all areas in industry from administration to journalism.
Stop Press and Newspaper Activities sections enables pupils and teachers to interact with each other with the help of the website. Stop Press is a news bulletin service covering stories from around the Northcliffe Group which are of interest to children. Newspaper Activities suggests various activities to help teachers discuss press issues with children. For example, there is a section describing the use of headlines and how to develop them.
There are sections which offer services and products to teachers, such as literature and CD ROMs, so they can obtain relevant resources for their students. Information can also be obtained covering other areas in the Northcliffe NiE Project.
The NiE News is an intelligent site which excels in promoting a medium (press) which the Internet is supposed to be replacing. It is a fine example of how one medium can complement another without acting as a marketing tool. The site is attractive to look at and well designed but this makes downloading slow, even on fast modems. The area which stands out the most is the careers section. It is the most accessible and informative, as it is easy to download, and contains relevant information for all ages.
There are no advertisements on the site but products relevant to education in press can be purchased.
