The PPA’s Internet site was launched at the weekend. Hosted by MediaTel, ‘Magazines.net’ is a large site full of information for both magazine and advertising industries.
The site is clearly laid out and easy to navigate with one main index from which to find the relevant information. The main sections of the site are:
News (weekly updates from the PPA)
Events (1996 diary of PPA events)
Magazines on the Net (an extensive list of electronic magazines from PPA members with information on individual titles)
How Magazines Advertising Works (a searchable database with information on advertising research reports and a handbook with information on magazine advertising)
Magazine Infofile (UK magazine statistics, including circulation, advertising and readership information plus sector reviews)
Industry Review (a review of the magazine industry for 1994-95)
Starting a Magazine (guidelines for new magazine publishers)
Careers and Training (courses and careers advice from PPA and Periodicals Training Council)
Consumer Protection (information on consumer rights when ordering goods through magazines)
As the list of contents suggest, this site has masses of comprehensive information regarding all aspects of the magazine industry. Although the amount of news, facts, data and advice is somewhat daunting, it is all easy to find and clearly laid out. Graphics are kept to a minimum and so the pages appear on the screen very quickly.
