Website of the Week – scrum.com

There are two problems with this site: a fantasy “Dream XV” section which does not allow you to pick your dream XV and sponsorship from Save & Prosper which is overbearing and annoying.

The first “Dream XV” bugbear is the process of filling in a lengthy form which probes into all your financial details for the benefit of Save & Prosper. The main problem however is that when selecting your team you have to choose at least six players from Welsh clubs or six from English clubs while only having a maximum of two from one team.

The first rule is a real puzzle – its not as if you are barred from selecting an all-English team so why have the minimum club rule? This becomes more restrictive when you can only have a maximum of two players from one team, even though there are only a few decent teams in Wales. This reviewer gave up and didn’t bother doing it at all – he doesn’t think there are six players from Welsh teams who could ever be in a “dream-team”. The loser in this instance of course was Save & Prosper. It is also a mystery why Simon Shaw is missing from the list of locks (which is a bit like excluding Ian Wright from a list of strikers)!

Where Save & Prosper really tie the user’s hands however is in the weekly quiz section where one of the questions concerns financial investment (with a handy link to its Website to find out more) and in the subscription form where, again, financial information is requested.

The frustrating thing however is that apart from these annoyances the site is actually very good and is a must for every self-respecting Rugby Union fan. As well as an efficient daily news service (it easily beat Sky Sport’s rugby section to the fact that Dallaglio is the new England captain), the quiz is good, there is detailed fixture, team and results information and a comprehensive links list to other rugby sites.

Other highlights include the fact that daily news can be delivered to your desktop each morning and there is also a conferencing system for fans to discuss the ‘finer points’ of the game. Despite the huge Save & Prosper banners, the site is also well-designed, uncluttered and easy to navigate.
