Website Of The Week – The Electronic Telegraph
The Electronic Telegraph is, quite simply, an enormous site with hundreds of pages, so my advice to you is to head straight for the site plan on arrival. This tool has alphabetically listed links and descriptions of all the destinations on the site, and should make your wanderings that more comprehensive and less random.
To be perfectly honest, I have very little to say against this site. The content varies from hard news, both UK and international, to reviews of books and music right through to a city and financial section. The front page and news and feature pages are updated every day, and the reader also has access to some archive material as well as current day stuff.
Highlights of today’s Electronic Telegraph for me were the interview with Patrick Moore called ‘Making Sousa Proud’, which is a charming portrayal of the eccentric stargazer, and the feature ‘Don’t Let The Diet Get You Down’ is an encouraging portrayal of how to lose weight on a diet without being ridiculously stoical about your food.
The Planet is the site’s travel section, and was reviewed earlier this year (see Newsline), and an extension of Juice, the title’s student pages, can also be accessed. Both of these form separate websites in their own right.
What I would fault The Electronic Telegraph on is the fact that it stumbles slightly on its design. Although the front page grabs and keeps your attention, a great deal of the text is presented against a white background, which is bland and dull. On the other hand, the quality of the writing is of a high enough calibre to keep you engaged, so this is not a fault which destroys the whole impact of the site.
Given the opportunity, I would gladly read this ‘virtual’ paper every day for my daily update of news, culture, information and the like, and highly recommend it as a high quality, interesting and informative site.
