Website Of The Week: The Sci-Fi Channel

http://www.scifi.com/

‘The Dominion’, the Sci-Fi Channel’s Internet pages, is more of a science fiction resource than a cable television media site, featuring everything a sci-fi fan could want.

There are eight sections to the site:

  • What’s New: new features of the site including latest contests and special events
  • Sci-Fi Feed: this is the main section related to the Sci-Fi Channel. Features include information about programmes and series, links to programme pages and schedules
  • Pulp: articles, reviews and excerpts from all literature regarding science fiction
  • Freezone: includes audio clips, images and video clips to download
  • Trader: a shopping facility for a variety of sci-fi items, especially those from films and tv shows
  • Bboard: a bulletin board and discussion group
  • Orbit: links to a mass of sci-fi sites and pages of interest
  • Feedback: the facility for users to e-mail the Sci-Fi Channel with comments regarding the site and also a list of FAQs about the channel and the site

As the above summary suggests, the site is absolutely huge. As a result it can be confusing and somewhat archaic to move around, with links often carrying the user to bizarre areas of the Net. The pages of the site can also take a long time to download because a lot of graphics and images are used. Overall, these pages are more of an interesting diversion for sci-fi fans than an information site about the actual channel.
