Whelan Moves Into House Beautiful

Natmags has poached Sarah Whelan, deputy editor of IPC’s Ideal Home to editor of House Beautiful, following the departure of Libby Norman, editor for two years, to “pursue her career independently of the National Magazine Company.”

Managing director Duncan Edwards said that the company was “delighted” with the appointment, adding “This market was invented by House Beautiful and we have some amazing plans for the year ahead.”

While House Beautiful may have invented the market, it no longer leads it, and has seen a steady decline in circulation in recent years (see graph below). Whelan, with experience including time at Homes and Gardens, Country Living, Woman’s Journal and the Sunday Times will doubtless be looking to reverse this.
