Wireless Group Receives Licence Renewals

The Radio Authority has extended the broadcasting licences of four flagship radio stations operated by the Wireless Group for a further eight years.

The stations, Signal 1 and Signal 2 in Stoke-on-Trent, 96.4 FM The Wave and Swansea Sound in Swansea are now licensed to operate until September 2011.

Commenting on the renewal, Chris Hurst, managing director of The Wireless Group, said: “This is great news for TWG and is a ringing endorsement of the service that The Wireless Group stations consistently provide for their communities.”

The Wireless Group recently unveiled data, produced by research firm GfK, which suggests that speech-based radio stations are more popular than RAJAR data had previously indicated (see New Study To Shake-Up Audience Measurement?).

The research boosted talkSPORT’s audience by around 6 million, making it, in GfK’s survey, the most listened to national commercial station.

Earlier this year, the government announced proposals for the launch of 32 new FM radio stations, which could provide services to a number of key cities over the next few years (see Raft Of New FM Radio Licences Proposed).
