Woman’s Own Celebrates 70th Birthday With Emmerdale

IPC’s most revered women’s weekly title, Woman’s Own, is to celebrate is seventieth birthday this month by getting together with ITV’s 30 year-old soap, Emmerdale.
To mark the occasion, October’s issue of the magazine for older women will feature its first gatefold cover, which will open to reveal a fashion spread of six of Emmerdale‘s “hottest” cast members.
Commenting on the initiative, Elsa McAlonan, editor of the magazine, said: “Woman’s Own‘s enduring success proves that as a magazine it is still original, bold and most importantly, as relevant to women’s lives today as when it was launched in October 1932. We continue to fill our pages with fresh and stylish features that our readers enjoy every week. I am delighted to be editor as it celebrates this important milestone.”
According to ABC figures for the first half of 2002, Woman’s Own has seen its circulation decline by 3.6% year on year to 518,861, down from 538,424 in the same period the previous year. Analysis of ABC data over a ten year period shows this to be part of a long-term trend, with competition from celebrity focused titles such as Take A Break, That’s Life! and Now weighing heavily on the veteran women’s weekly.
Former Woman’s Journal editor, Elsa McAlonan, took over from Terry Tavner as editor of Woman’s Own earlier this year, redesigning the title to mark its anniversary (see New Editor For Veteran IPC Weekly).
