Women Lead The Field In Terms Of Text

Women are significantly ahead of men when it comes to text messaging, with 74% of the fairer sex claiming to have sent a text message within the last two minutes, compared to just 26% of men, according to new research from the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

The data also shows that the take up of text messaging amongst women is so strong that 51% would rather receive a text message than a card on special occasions.

A further 50% use SMS as a way of keeping in contact with friends and family, a fact which the MDA claims is indicative of the growth of text messaging as the chosen communications tool for women, regardless of age.

Commenting on the figures, Mike Short, chairman of the MDA, said: “Women are more confident when it comes to texting with 67% classifying themselves as text competent, compared to only 33% of men. In addition, when it comes to family relationships, 42% of women recognise text as a way of sharing a popular interest with their children.”

The latest monthly figures from the MDA show that text messaging reached an all time high in March, with an average of 56 million SMS messages sent each day during the month (see Text Messaging Hits All Time High In March).

Mobile marketing looks set to move on to the next level and the increasing uptake of third generation handsets means that around 20% of mobile phone users will soon have phones capable of receiving multi-media advertising messages (see Multi-Media Messaging Shows Potential For Advertisers).
