Worst Place to Be a Pilot results in C4’s biggest hit

Last night Channel 4 took viewers on a precarious airborne journey through some of Indonesia’s most isolated communities in the broadcaster’s latest ‘quirky’ work place documentary, Worst Place to Be a Pilot (9pm).

The programme followed fresh faced British pilots who were so desperate to earn some essential experience that they signed up for some of the most stomach churning journeys – and with an airline with a less than comforting fatality record.

The beautiful and treacherous HD vistas of Tuesday night’s island-hopping adventure brought in 1.4 million viewers and a 7% share, with another 292,000 viewers tuning in an hour later on Channel 4 +1.

Over on BBC One, there were more adventures to be had for the heavily pregnant protagonists of In the Club (9pm). The third episode of Kay Mellor’s latest drama dealt with the messy emotional after-birth of last week’s arrival, while it was time for Hermione Norris’s Roanna to be rushed into the delivery room.

Last night’s scream-filled moments depicting the beauty of procreation locked in the show’s biggest audience yet, with 4.5 million viewers and a 22% share.

At the same time, BBC Two kicked off a new three-part series as the channel’s latest rock star tag team, biologist Patrick Aryee and physicist Helen Czerski, took a look at various animals’ cool sensory abilities. The first episode of Super Senses: The Secret Power of Animals secured 1.5 million viewers and a 7% share.

Earlier at 8pm, Holby City (BBC One) brought in 3.9 million viewers and a 20% share, while the latest series of Coast came to an end on BBC Two. A million miles away from the recent Coast Australia, last night’s final visit to the country’s shoreline looked at the harsh effects of winter and secured the channel’s biggest audience of the day with 1.8 million viewers.

Elsewhere the 8pm hour went canine crazy, with two light and breezy magazine shows about the UK’s favourite four legged animal.

Channel 4’s Dogs: Their Secret Lives returned for a three part series after a one-off last year and brought in 1.3 million viewers and a 7% share while Channel 5’s The Dog Rescuers netted 867,000 viewers and a 5% share.

Even earlier, ITV took teatime viewers all the way to sunny Turkey for the latest qualifying game for the UEFA Champions League (7:30pm). 7:45pm saw the actual kick off between home team Besiktas and Arsenal, netting 3 million viewers and a 15% share.

The uneventful 0-0 game didn’t manage to attract casual viewers, with the match peaking at a lowly 3.7 million at 9pm.

At 7pm, Emmerdale provided some teatime violence and aggression as the village dealt with the fall out of Donna’s death by having the male characters get all shouty, resulting in an audience of just over 5 million viewers and a 30% share.

But it was urban soap EastEnders that took the day’s top spot at 7:30pm on BBC One. Going directly up against the match on ITV didn’t stop the Walford soap from securing 5.6 million viewers, with scenes of Charlie Cotton’s secrets being unveiled netting a 31% share.
