YouGov has named BBC iPlayer as the top-rated brand in its 2012 BrandIndex Buzz rankings.
The video-on-demand service surpassed Amazon and Marks & Spencer for the first time in the rankings, which take in more than 850 brands across 34 different categories.
IPlayer was lauded for the strength of its user experience, as well as expanding the amount of content available on its service, which now includes programmes from outside the BBC, in a move known as “partner linking”.
The service also recently became available through the Xbox game console, expanding iPlayer’s reach and potential audience.
Other technology brands to feature in the YouGov top 10 were Apple, Samsung and Google. The “brand loyalty” of Apple’s iPhone customers and dominance of the iPad have shut out competitors, while the popularity of Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones explained its first time in the top 10.
Google, despite its placing, is apparently suffering from a consumer perception that it is a brand “on the wane”, particularly in the wake of its recent fine for privacy violations.
