PM OPPOSES STATUTORY CONTROL

Speaking at the Newspaper Society’s AGM lunch yesterday the Prime Minister John Major told regional newspaper publishers that he favoured the concept of press self-regulation as opposed to statutory controls. “We were very encouraged by the Prime Minister’s remarks regarding self-regulation” says the Society’s director Dugal Nisbet-Smith; “He has confirmed the Government’s reluctance to pursue statutory controls and backed industry moves to reinforce the existing voluntary system of self-regulation”.
