Salmon To Join The Television Corporation

The Television Corporation has appointed ex BBC director of sport, Peter Salmon as group chief executive with effect from 1 July.

Salmon will replace Jeff Foulser, who will remain on the board and become director of sport and chairman of Sunset & Vine, the group’s sports production arm.

Commenting on the appointment, Tom Chandos, chairman of The Television Corporation said: “Peter Salmon has been a driving force at the BBC, Granada and Channel 4.”

Chandos continued: “The Television Corporation will benefit greatly from his assuming the role of chief executive, both through his direct contribution and through is freeing up Jeff Foulser to concentrate entirely on the huge opportunities in sport, both in the UK and internationally.”

Salmon added: “The Television Corporation is one of the top independent television production groups in the UK, in a sector that is experiencing exciting growth opportunities and is a proven international player in creating, producing and distributing television formats.”

“It is a entrepreneurial and creative organisation and its ambitions to grow and consolidate are just too much of a temptation for me, as is a return to programme making, from drama to factual that epitomised my earlier career.”

Yesterday it was announced that Salmon had left the BBC after more than four years, becoming one of the senior causalities of the BBC’s relocation to Manchester.

The BBC plans to move major departments, including sport and children’s, to Manchester by 2010, with the sport sector expected to lose up to 66 staff as part of the BBC’s cuts.

Before joining the BBC, Salmon was director of programmes for Granada Television, commissioning Cold Feet and moving Coronation Street from three episodes a week to four.
