ABC adopts new ‘streamlined’ standards to reflect publishing’s digital shift

ABC, the publishing industry joint-industry currency (JIC), has revised its reporting standards to better reflect the publishing industry’s digital transformation.

The “streamlined” changes include:

  • Print and digital copies to the same individual can now both be included in a publication’s circulation figure (the number of individuals receiving both print and digital will be clearly stated).
  • Digital copies can be claimed in some circulation categories that previously were restricted only to print copies.
  • Circulation categories across sectors have been better aligned to make cross-sector comparisons easier for media buyers.
  • Efforts to introduce efficiencies for publishers to save them time in reporting.

The changes are the result of extensive consultations with media buyers, publishers and their trade bodies, according to the ABC.

The JIC expects the new rules will result in an increase in headline ABC figures and a more efficient audit process.

“We’re delighted to unveil our updated standards, delivering efficiencies for both publishers and buyers whilst providing a more complete picture of the publishing industry,” said ABC CEO Simon Redlich.

All media sectors will be transitioned to the new standards this year, with changes evident when publishers next report their ABC figures.

Sajeeda Merali, CEO of the Professional Publishers Association (PPA), said the group welcomed the updated standards. “By reporting digital circulation alongside print in a consistent way, ABC is further supporting our members’ delivery of high-quality content across their many touchpoints,” she said. “The greater ease of reporting will also be hugely beneficial.”

IPA research director Belinda Beeftink added the changes “demonstrate ABC’s ongoing commitment to providing accurate and reliable data that empowers media buyers to make informed decisions”, and will help ensure “that the industry has the tools it needs to thrive”.
