ABCe Shows Sun’s Website Scoops Second Spot

Sun Site The Sun‘s online offering has overtaken Times Online as the second largest national newspaper site this month, according to the ABCe.

TheSun.co.uk was up 9.3% from last month, recording just over nine million unique users in May. Times Online, meanwhile, dipped almost 2% month on month to 8.7 million unique users.

Times Online peaked at almost 11 million unique users in January (see Newspapers’ Print Circulations Decline As Web Traffic Blossoms), the last full month before its relaunch in early February.

Guardian Unlimited remains Britain’s leading newspaper web site (see ABCe Shows Guardian Unlimited On Top), with more than 16 million unique users. In the month that saw it redesign its front page, Guardian Unlimited recorded a 20% year on year increase in unique users and an almost 6% climb over April.

Telegraph.co.uk lost around 1.6% month on month, with 7.3 million users in May.

All four newspapers release these figures each month as part of the ABCe monthly group product report (see ABCe To Regularly Release Web Traffic Figures For National Newspapers).

However, reporting of this type could change as ABCe is considering moving to a daily unique user figure to iron out some of the inconsistencies of the monthly reporting (see Measuring Today’s Evolving Media). A decision on this will be made later in the summer.
