BBC Wins Christmas Day Ratings Battle
BBC One saw victory with Eastenders on Christmas Day, drawing an average adult audience of 9 million adults to beat ITV’s Coronation Street, which scored 8.6 million 30 minutes earlier.
The Corporation’s festive victory was helped at least in part by a special edition Dr Who, airing from 7pm-8pm and drawing 8 million against ITV’s Christmas Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, with 5.9 million.
Sitcom spin-off The Green Green Grass was the only BBC One programme to suffer defeat at the hands of ITV on Christmas Day, with an average audience of 4 million comparing unfavourably against ITV’s Coronation Street.
Elsewhere, Channel 4’s film, Jerry Maguire, scored its highest ratings of the day, with an average audience of 1.2 million. Five saw success with the Greatest TV Comedy Moments, meanwhile, notching up an average audience of 1.4 million to provide the highlight of its evening.
