British Vogue hires first male editor

Vogue UK has appointed Edward Enninful as its eleventh editor – the first male and black editor in its 100-year history.

Enninful will begin his new role on 1 August and will be replacing Alexandra Shulman, who stepped down in January after 25 years in the role.

He joins from American magazine W where he has served as creative and fashion director since 2011. Prior to that, Enninful held the position of fashion director for over 20 years at the British title i-D.

He was also a contributor to the US and Italian editions of Vogue and is the first external candidate to take over the role of editor.

Condé Nast’s chair, Jonathan Newhouse, described Enninful as “an influential figure in the communities of fashion, Hollywood and music which shape the cultural zeitgeist.”

“British Vogue is a great magazine with a legacy of creativity and innovation,” Enninful told Vogue UK.

“I look forward to continuing to produce an exciting beautiful magazine for its readers.”

Vogue UK launched in 1916 and has a current circulation of 195,100, according to the latest ABC figures.
