Britons Spending More Time Online

The proportion of internet users in Britain spending more than five hours per week online has more than doubled in the past 10 years, from 25% in 1998 to 58% in 2008, according to a new report.

The BT 21st Century Life Index commissioned Ipsos MORI to survey 2,000 people across Britain to find out how the populations technology and media consumption has changed over the past decade.

It found that while three quarters of internet users (75%) spent less than six hours online ten years ago, this has dropped to only 42% in 2008.

Social networking online is also increasingly becoming the norm, with 25% of internet users interacting with these sites in 2008.

Listening to the radio via the internet is a popular activity, with 27% of those online doing this, while 14% use it for gaming.

Podcasts have yet to hit the mainstream, with only 8% of people using them and just 2% engage with online communities such as Second Life.

In February eMarketer predicted that 42.8 million Britons will go online in 2012, accounting for about 70% of the population (see 70% Of UK Will Go Online In 2012).
