BSkyB Enjoys 31% Rise In Operating Profit

Satellite broadcaster, BSkyB, has added 95,000 net DHT subscribers to its subscriber base, aiding strong financial results and taking the subscriber base to over 7.7 million, compared to 7.3 million in 2004.

The group’s results for the third quarter reveal a 31% year on year growth in operating profit to £574 million and a 51% increase in earnings per share to 19.9 pence.

The number of Sky+ households have also risen, by 128,000 during Q3, to reach 770,000, compared with 322,000 in 2004. Multiroom households continued the upward trend, increasing by 90,000 in Q3 to 563,00, up from 33,000 in 2004 (see BSkyB Closes In On 8 Million Subscriber Target).

Turnover for the company increased by 10% year on year in Q3, to £2,960 million, while operating cash inflow rose by 23% compared to the same period last year to £635 million. Profit after tax was up almost 50% to £381 million.

BSkyB showed that net debt has been reduced to £414 million after returning £291 million through a share buy-back programme.

Commenting on the results, James Murdoch, BSkyB chief executive said: “Continued focus on the implementation of our strategy is returning strong subscriber growth, a good mix of customers, growth in Sky+ and multiroom, and substantial profit and cash flow.”

He added: “The whole team at Sky put in a strong performance to deliver these results and we remain focused and energetic in pursuing our long-term growth plan.”
