Bass has signed a £700,000 sponsorship deal with The Word to support coverage of the FA Carling Premiership in the participating regional newspapers throughout the season.
The £71m bid by Emap for Trans World Communications has been declared unconditional. The acceptance of Owen Oysten who owns 22.1%, together with acceptances from a further 1% of shares, gives Emap control of 52.7% of the equity. The cash offer will remain open.
Television coverage of cricket played in England is to be divided between BBC and BSkyB, in separate agreements with the Test and County Cricket Board. The annual inflation rate fell to 2.3% in July, down from 2.6% in June, according to the Retail Prices Index released this morning. The actual figure, taking 1985 as the base, was 152.2. The underlying rate, excluding mortgage interest payments, fell to 2.2% from 2.4% – the lowest level since 1975.
