Cheap Access Drives Net Usage In Germany

There were 26 million internet users in Germany as of June this year, according to data from Forsa, the German society for social research and statistical analysis. This represents a significant growth on the 8.8 million that were online just two years earlier.

Around 40% of Germans over the age of 14 are users and around 20% of this group are aged over 50, the study found. The growth has been driven by the relatively low access costs that Germany has so far enjoyed.

A separate study has shown that more than 11 million Italians had surfed the Net in the three months to 3 July. The figures, from a study conducted by CNEL and Eurisko, show that Italy’s internet penetration is now at 25%, in line with France. The UK currently has a penetration of about 46%, according to research from The Media Edge (see Forecasts).

Scandinavian countries are leading the way with internet take-up. In Sweden penetration is already at 65%.
