Clear Channel Wins Glasgow Contract

Clear Channel Logo Glasgow City Council has awarded Clear Channel Outdoor UK the nine-year contract to develop and operate what the City describes as “landmark advertising on island sites and roundabout locations in Council ownership”.

The 10 gateway locations will comprise bespoke architectural structures housing large-format backlit displays at key sites in the city such as Anniesland Cross, Castle Street and Barrhead Road.

The award will complement Clear Channel Outdoor’s existing portfolio of bespoke landmark structures such as Wandsworth Bridge roundabout in London, Chester Road roundabout in Manchester and the Millenium Arches in Birmingham.

Clear Channel Outdoor has placed the design brief with the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow, which takes its name from Scotland’s most famous architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Barry Sayer, CEO of Clear Channel Outdoor UK, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen as Glasgow’s partner in this exciting and prestigious project. Whilst we also participated in the other tender for more traditional billboard advertising this was the one we really saw as representing the future of outdoor advertising in the city.”

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “Glasgow City Council is delighted to be working with Clear Channel Outdoor on this high profile contract. We are confident that, working with the Mackintosh School of Architecture, they will produce something which will add real value to Glasgow’s urban landscape while showcasing the design capabilities we have right here in the city.”

Sayer was one of the panellists at this week’s MediaTel Group ‘Future of Outdoor’ seminar, where he eulogised on the benifits of digital in the outdoor arena, claiming that in the future, digital and outdoor will be one and the same (see Digital Outdoor Debate Sparks Mixed Views).
