Cost Of Digital Radio Set To Fall

GWR Group plc’s 63% owned subsidiary, Digital One, announcement today that they are to enter into a strategic agreement with Imagination Technologies plc to jointly develop, fund and market a low power, low cost digital Base-Band chip and the reference design for a digital radio receiver module.

The agreement will result in smaller, lighter, portable and cheaper digital radios being available for under £150 within the year with an expectation that the sub £100 price point will be possible for the first time. Currently, digital radios are only available in hi-fi tuner or an in-car format with a price point of around £299.

Ralph Bernard, Chief Executive GWR Group plc, said “Progress continues on the expansion of transmission areas with 78% of the population already able to receive digital quality radio. The availability of a lower cost and a broader range of digital radios earlier than anticipated should speed the development of the consumer market in Digital Radio”
