Early January Buying Indicators Put ITV Revenue Off 20%

Early media buying estimates from trade journal Media Week are indicating that ITV’s advertising revenues will be down by more than 20% in January next year. Year on year in September, revenue was down 18.7% and in October it declined 11.9%, according agency estimates compiled by MediaTel.co.uk.

ABN Amro says that if the Media Week figures prove to be accurate, its forecast of a 15% decline in Q1 2002 may prove to be optimistic, given that February and March have tougher comparables.

Analysts say that those hoping that the unexpected upturn in Q4 this year is indicative of an ongoing trend are likely to be disappointed. The broker’s forecasts currently assume a decline for calendar year revenue of 4%, assuming a return to positive growth only in calendar Q4.
