Emap Appoints Payne As Magazine Director

Lachlan Murdoch Emap Advertising has announced the appointment of Steve Payne to the newly-created post of strategic planning director for magazines, underlining the company’s focus on strategy and the increasing recognition of planning and buying departments as separate entities.

The new position is the first of its kind in the publishing industry, with Emap claiming it marks an intention to build an informed two-way relationship with media platform decision makers which has never been greater.

Reporting into Jason Trout, deputy magazine sales director, Payne’s new role will involve working closely with the PPA to drive the presence of magazines within mixed media planning schedules. Promotion of Emap’s key brands will also be high on his agenda, with the strength of initiataives such as ‘First for Men’ likely to be championed.

The move to Emap sees Payne leave Initiative Media where he has worked for the last seven years, most recently as a planning director. He will take up his role as strategic planning director for magazines later this month.

Commenting on Payne’s appointment, Jason Trout said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Steve to Emap Advertising. His first hand experience of being a strategic planner within a top flight media agency will prove invaluable for building our relationships with like minded people within agencies. He will be an integral part of our ongoing commitment to building deeper and more effective relationships with our customers.”

Emap’s increased focus on planning is further highlighted by the internal appointment of Mandy Fowler to strategic agencies director, with a focus on the company’s broadcast brands.
