Emap Poaches IPC’s Conklin To Edit New Woman Magazine

Emap Consumer Media has announced the appointment of Margi Conklin, deputy editor of IPC’s Instyle magazine, as the new editor of its monthly fashion and beauty title New Woman.

She replaces Sara Cremer, who has been promoted to the role of executive editor of special projects at Emap Elan. The appointment marks a return to New Woman for Conklin, who worked on the title as features editor and then assistant editor between 1998 and 2000.

Commenting on the appointment, publisher Augusta Barnes, said: “Emap has significant ambitions for New Woman and we believe that Margi’s experience and expertise will inspire an already brilliant editorial team to even greater heights.”

Conklin, who has also edited Emap’s Celebrity Looks magazine, added: “New Woman is a fantastic, funny, vibrant magazine blessed with great ideas and an enthusiastic team – so to become editor of it, is an absolute dream.”

The latest ABC results for the six months to December 2003 show that New Woman saw its circulation decline by 1.4% year on year to 290,533. The title has seen sales fluctuate in the face of increasing competition in the sector, but its fortunes have been improving of late.

The women’s monthlies sector has been in focus this week following reports that Condé Nast is preparing to launch a new glossy magazine to go head-to-head with Hachette Filipacchi’s Red in the market for affluent thirty something women (see Condé Nast Silent Over Plans For New Women’s Glossy).

Last week the National Magazine Company also announced plans to launch a new celebrity-focused weekly to compete with Emap’s highly successful Closer. The publisher confirmed that it is currently developing a new weekly under the working title Reveal, in an attempt to cash in on the rapidly expanding sector (see Natmags To Take On Closer With New Celebrity Weekly).
