European Media And Economic Outlook From Billetts

The UK is battling the economic and advertising downturn pretty well, according to a new European outlook report from media auditing company Billetts.

The report says that there was growth in GDP in 2002 and that this likely to increase in 2003 by just over 2%. Advertising spend stabilised in 2002 and is expected by Billetts to show growth again in 2003 of about 2%.

Billetts predicts that the television market will show a 4% growth following a slight recovery in 2002 and a ‘disastrous’ 2001. Stability is expected to return to the magazine market after a significant decline in investment during 2002, says the report.

In France, television costs are expected to stabilise in 2003. Newspaper prices are likely to decline moderately, whilst magazine costs will fall sharply, by around 3%.

In Germany, all major media are still being affected by the general poor economic trend and prices are set to deflate by 5% overall, say Billetts.

Costs in Spain’s television market are expected to rise by 3.3% this year, whilst print media inflation should be moderate and below levels of consumer prices.
