German Public Service Broadcasters Acquire World Cup Rights

German public service broadcasters ARD and ZDF have acquired the rights to show the 2002 and 2006 World Cup competitions after reaching an agreement with Kirch, owner of the European-wide rights to the tournaments.

The news follows Kirch’s previous refusal to guarantee the rights to the 2006 competition in a potential DM225 million sale of the broadcasting rights for the 2002 games. It is understood that the German chancellor exerted political pressure on the negotiations leading to a deal for the public service broadcasters to gain access to both tournaments.

Details of the sale of the rights, for which Kirch paid DM1.7 billion, have not yet been released.
