Germany Set To Take Digital Crown

By 2006, Germany will have overtaken the UK to become Europe’s most profitable digital pay-TV market, according to business information company, Datamonitor.

The UK market was rated the most valuable in Europe last year, bringing in $3.5 billion in revenues. By contrast, the preponderance of free to air channels and licence free public funded channels has meant that Germany’s digital pay-TV market has been underdeveloped until now.

However, a high profile campaign is underway to encourage cable households to upgrade to digital. As a result, Datamonitor forecasts that the German digital pay-TV market will be worth $9.3 billion in four years time.

A recent report by Strategy Analytics predicted that the number of digital TV homes in Europe will have increased to 87 million by 2006 (see European Digital TV Will Show Solid Growth Despite Setbacks).
