Global Home Internet Population Keeps Growing

According to the latest figures from Nielsen//NetRatings, the number of home internet users has grown by about 7% between Q4 2002 when at-home net users totalled 498.2 million (see Online Population Continues To Grow) and Q1 2002 when the figure reached 531.3 million.

The report First Quarter 2002 Global Internet Trends also revealed that email is the most popular online activity ahead of instant messaging, visiting chat rooms and streaming media services such as watching videos or listening to internet radio. The key to the success of email, says Nielsen//NetRatings, is that it is a cheap and easy means of communicating with people near and far and does not require high bandwidth access as many other net applications do.

According to the report, 34% of net users worldwide are living in Canada and the US, 27% are in Europe and the Middle East, 21% in the Asia-pacific region and 2% in Latin America.

The report further revealed that 90% of adults in the UK had used email within the last six months although use of other online activities and services was much lower.
