Global Telco IPTV Subscribers Grow 13%

Global telco IPTV subscribers grew 13% to 5.4 million in Q1 2007, according to a new report from Dittberner.

The 1Q07 Global Broadband Subscriber Survey said that PCCW of Hong Kong – with 800,000 subscribers – was the largest telco IPTV operator, with second place France Telecom at 769,000 expected to overtake it by the third quarter.

According to the report, Hong Kong, viewed separately from China, has the highest penetration of the entire broadband subscriber base at 55.6%.

Although Western Europe still dominates the IPTV market, its share is down from 68% six months ago, whilst Asia’s market share has increased from 28% to 41% over the same period, owing largely to growth in China and Japan.

North America’s share increased from 2% to 5%, due mostly to growth at small independent operators.

James Heath, research director at Dittberner, said: “The fact that China has finally awarded licences for IPTV means that it will grow quickly and probably come to dominate the market at seven million IPTV subscribers within two years.

“Japan is likely to have good growth and may challenge China for a while, but North America, with its entrenched TV operators, will be a slow roll.”

A recent report from Parks Associates predicted that the number of IPTV subscribers will reach nearly 60 million worldwide by the end of 2011 (see 60 Million IPTV Subscribers Worldwide By 2011).

Meanwhile, the most recent analysis from Screen Digest, which examines the 54 IPTV services across Europe, said that the European IPTV market will double this year (see European IPTV Market To Double).
